Luna is a Mobile Satellite residing in the third band of the Sol system. In contrast to most celestial objects in the Sol System, it has a highly inclined orbit, around 82 degrees relative to Terra. Luna was a former satellite of Terra until it departed Terran orbit during the Terran Fall From Grace.
The name 'Luna' comes from the Latin translation for the English word 'moon'. Humans were not aware of other moons surrounding other planets in the Sol system, and therefore assumed that Luna was the only 'moon' in their night sky; therefore calling it 'the moon'. The change from 'moon' to 'luna' was representative of Luna's habitation and to respect other moons in the Sol system.
The Free Republic of Luna was called the 'Lunar Autonomous Republic' before its forceful seperation from Terra.
The first self-sustaining outpost on Luna was constructed in 2031 A.D., and the first permanent residence followed in 2071 A.D. From there, the city 'New Denver' was built, marking the first permanent large-scale city on Luna. Due to Luna being the first extraterran celestial body to house humans - beating Aresia by a meager 7 years - it was a far more pacifist, welcoming, and unified community.
In 2334 A.D. construction on Luna's Mobility Megastructure began. In 2351 A.D. a main thrust generator at the back in circular segments, finished construction. In 2358 A.D. the front second-main thrust generator was completed. Total completion of the Lunar Mobility Megastructure would occur in 2377 A.D., and the Lunar population would skyrocket from 2 million to 11 million in coming decades. Soon after that in 2404 A.D. the Terralunar Space Transit Elevator (TSTE) was constructed. Plans to build this elevator had solidified all the way back in the 23rd century, but had never been put into action until 2404 A.D. due to corporate lobbying done by Terra-to-Luna transit corporations to try to keep their industry profitable. In 2399 A.D. these political scandals were exposed, allowing the plans to pass. Between 2404 A.D. and 2407 A.D., construction of the TSTE was ongoing until late 2407 A.D., where it was completed. The space elevator provided a great sense of unity among both Terrans and Lunarians for decades to come.
Throughout the 25th, 26th, and 27th centuries, new space elevators were built. The elevators were designated alphabetically, from A to H.
Displayed below are the elevator names and their respective construction dates from start to end.
Elevator A (2404-2407)
Elevator B (2439-4344)
Elevator C (2499-2502)
Elevator D (2520-2527)
Elevator E (2577-2583)
Elevator F (2598-2600)
Elevator G (2598-2601)
Elevator H (2632-2633)
Even into the 27th century, Lunarians were often considered 'kinder' and 'more considerate' than Terrans, leading to slight discourse between the two. This discourse would remain relatively minor up until the Terran Fall From Grace, where Terra begun to rapidly extremify in ideology.
The Lunarian Supreme Council did not find itself to align with the increasingly right-wing government of Terra. Due to the fact that Terra had economic leverage over Luna, Terra started to put tariffs on Lunar trade, import and export. The Lunar economy managed to endure by ramping up industrial funding to keep the economy alive. As an unintended consequence, the welfare programs on Luna dropped in quality. Tensions between the two reached an all-time high during the Terran Fall From Grace. After Terra endured a short civil war where a far-right organisation seized control of the planet, they stated their intentions to forcefully reclaim Luna if they did not capitulate to new Terran order. The Lunarians did not take kindly to this, as within 7 hours, a coordinated attack on all 8 space elevators connecting Terra with Luna, seperating the two bodies. Luna stayed in Terra's orbit for another 62 days before departing. Luna would then accelerate in orbit in the 'antinormal' orientation relative to Terra, leaving its orbit.
Half a Terrayear later the Lunar Autonomous Republic rebranded itself to the Free Republic of Luna, to signify their freedom from a now corrupt Terra. Welfare programs and the Lunar economy slowly recovered over the course of a century and today Luna is one of the few self-sustaining Mobile Satellites in the Sol system. As of today, Terra and Luna now regularly avoid being in the vicinity of each other, due to a mutual hatred/anxiety their populations hold towards the other.
